JEDI Efforts
Many efforts are posted on the CEAS website that redress and abolish discrimination, racism, homophobia, classism, and deeply ingrained de- humanizing policies and practices. We have a new statement from the CSU Ed Deans, a statement from , and our college’s statements of inclusivity and anti-racist practices. Additionally, the president of CSUEB has committed the strategic plan and resources to rooting out racism and prejudice from our campus. As dean, I am honored, to have all of you as colleagues, knowing that the path is forward.

Enrollment will Rise
This college, more than any other, is in an all-hands-on- deck mode to increase enrollment.
Recruitment Updates
Interim Associate Dean Chris Chamberlain reported that his efforts at reaching out to 16,000 students resulted in 144 clicks to our Teacher Education/CSSC websites. This is actually greater than 1% of the approximate 10,000 usable emails. One nice consequence seems to be growing interest in teacher education information sessions. Chris described the rooms as “full to rafters.”

EPSY
Educational Psychology continues to experience strong interest in their Master’s programs in School Counseling, School Psychology, MFT, and Special Education. The state of California has poured millions into mental health and special education. Recently, three PPS-School students were awarded the Golden State Teach Award, which can now be awarded to PPS students. Congratulations!
Associate Dean Search
I am happy to report that the search committee will begin phone interviews next week. Look for on-campus interviews during the first week of December. All from the CEAS community are invited to attend. The hard work of the committee must be acknowledged publicly. Please join me in recognizing the members: Matt Atencio (Chair); Michele Korb; Monica Green; Yasmeen Alhaithani; Mary Fortune; Sara McDaniel; and G. Reyes.

CEAS Seminar
Today we held a Town Hall meeting with HRT and KIN students. We had a great event that was attended by over 20 KIN/HRT students. We awarded a scholarship to Alejandra Hart and Isabel De Armas Barboza who were randomly selected from the group of students that attended. CEAS faculty who led and presented: James Trayer (ASI Rep), Paul Carpenter, Saehya Ann, Emily Zambrano, and Angela Byrns. And thanks to Dr. Cathy Inouye and Rayna Young for attending and for being a resource while there.

Pursuing more undergraduates
Recently, Katie Avila presented the university’s tactics to recruit new students. It is good work and some new, innovative actions are being pursued. The dean and HRT/KIN will meet up soon to strengthen our recruitment and SIR campaigns in partnership with Student Affairs. Our goal will be to reach new student levels similar to 2020 or earlier.

More Ed Doc Students Campaign:
The Ed Doc program and DEL have been given the request to increase their enrollmen. Debbie Woods is doing her part by working with our social media student and our website student to increase presence. Eric Haas is pounding the pavement to recruit doctoral candidates. And all other faculty are doing their part by re-establishing connections with graduates who are positions of influence and knowledge of potential candidates. Finally, Nicole Williams-Browning developed a marketing plan which is being implemented; and she is developing a plan for an online cohort for the Ed Doc program.

CSU Fullerton – Critical Race Theory
Recently, one of Education deans was in the news because she, Dr. Lisa Kirtman, decided to pull teacher candidates out of the Yorba-Linda (Orange County) School District. This decision was in response to the district leadership declaring that Critical Race Theory had no place in the district. They called out 911±¬ÁÏÍøState Fullerton and declared that they did want candidates bringing that perspective to their children.

Speaking of Critical Race Theory
On February 4, 2023, the Educational Doctoral students will present a Teach-In on Critical Race Theory. This will be one of our presentations a part of the CEAS Social Justice Speaker Series. This presentation will be available to the CSUEB campus community and alumni. The recording of the presentation will be posted publicly. It may seem early, but we are preparing for an important presentation on February 8th, which will feature another important discussion about race in America. We will keep you posted.

More Educator Preparation Candidates Campaign:
Interim Associate Dean/Interim TED Chair, Chris Chamberlain, recently obtained the contact information for 16,000 CSUEB students who expressed interest in teacher education. He is building an outreach campaign. Keep your fingers crossed that we can attract even as few as 3-5% (480-800)! Even 1% (160) would be phenomenal for the college.

Transfer Student Recruitment
HRT and KIN faculty and staff are participating in October’s Transfer Fridays. Our transfers comprise the largest single population of new students. Shout out to everyone who enthusiastically sits at the tables to recruit new students. Our next task will be to get as many of our “accepted” applicants to SIR next year.
In the coming weeks, I will spotlight recruitment efforts that are happening in all of our departments.
Associate Dean Search
The search for a permanent Associate Dean is well underway. The search committee has one representative from each department, plus two staff members. All are volunteering their time and talent. We know who they are. I am not advertising their names because I want to prevent the public from reaching out to them.

DEI Based Program Learning Outcomes
Dr. Ardella Dailey and Dr. Doris Yates are earnestly developing two options for DEI based Program Learning Outcomes that all departments will consider adopting. Dr. Dailey will meet with each department to facilitate discussions about the PLOs. The PLOs emerged directly from the faculty-led/Strategic Planning Committee led statements on anti-racism and inclusion. More news on this is forthcoming.
