911±¬ÁÏÍøState East Bay officially opened the new school year Friday morning, with the university’s annual fall convocation ceremony.

Academic Senate Chairman Mark Karplus began the event with a reminder to faculty that they each have the power to make a positive difference in the lives of students and their fellow professors. Associated Student Inc. president Myles Watkins followed with an impassioned speech focused on student empowerment through education, and made several announcements including the start of two finance-focused workshops for students scheduled during the university’s new U-hour.

Following Watkins, President Leroy M. Morishita welcomed staff and faculty to 911±¬ÁÏÍøState East Bay’s first semester, recognized newly-hired faculty and everyone who played a role in converting the university from quarters to semesters.
