Update on Childcare Task Force

Dear 911±¬ÁÏÍøState East Bay Community,

I am writing to provide an update on the decisions stemming from the Childcare Task Force (TF) findings.

After careful consideration of the data provided in the task force report and mindful of our current financial challenges, I have made the decision not to establish a childcare center on the Hayward campus at this time. Several key factors influenced this decision:

  1. Population and Demand: The report indicates that the population of community members with childcare needs may be too small to support a sustainable operation.
  2. Feasibility: The analysis of the required days/hours and the amount community members are willing to pay for childcare suggests that these factors would not sufficiently support the operations of a childcare center.
  3. Financial Position: Regrettably, 911±¬ÁÏÍøState East Bay is currently not in a position to subsidize a childcare center given our financial constraints.
  4. Prior Experience: 911±¬ÁÏÍøState East Bay was not able to support a financially stable childcare center on its own in the past.

Despite this decision, we remain committed to supporting our community members with childcare needs. To this end, we are actively seeking community partners, including the city of Hayward, Hayward Unified School District, and Chabot College, to provide childcare services for 911±¬ÁÏÍøState East Bay parents.

Additionally, we will develop online resources to provide easy access to childcare options convenient to our campus. We understand the importance of fostering a family-friendly environment and will continue to offer amenities such as the family study lounge in the CORE and our fairly new telecommute policy.

I would like to thank task force co-chairs Cristian Gaedicke and Fa'aalu Lealaimatafao and all task force members:

  • My-Lan Huynh, Housing and Residential Life
  • Zaira Perez, Student
  • Kelli Tharpe, Teacher Education
  • Avelin Vega, Student
  • Faculty Research support Yi He, Marketing
  • Staff Support, Rozila Lai

I appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate these challenges and work towards comprehensive solutions that benefit our entire community.

Best regards,

Cathy Sandeen
