Construction Management

The School of Engineering offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in construction management. The goals of the B.S. degree are to prepare effective managers for public and private construction projects, prepare the workforce required by the construction industry, and enable students to assume leadership roles in the construction industry. Special attention is given to promote working professionals and students participating in internships by offering classes during times that are most convenient.

The M.S. degree is aimed at working professionals who are in leadership or management positions in the construction industry or who plan to advance their careers to manage large construction projects. Its goals are to prepare effective managers for large public and private construction projects, prepare the workforce required for the state’s transportation infrastructure improvements, and enable current and future engineers and other professionals to assume leadership roles in the construction industry.

Courses You Might Take

CMGT 310 - Statics and Strength of Materials

An intermediate introduction to Newtonian mechanics. Learn about the fundamental concepts of mechanics, including resultants of force systems, free-body diagrams, equilibrium of rigid bodies, and analyses of structures.

CMGT 320 - Construction Law

An introduction to rules and regulations governing the construction industry, including contractors licensing law, state lien laws, health and safety regulations, personnel relations and supervision, worker compensation, employment insurance, taxes, and dispute resolution.

CMGT 325 - Electrical and Mechanical Systems in Construction

An introduction to current principles and practices in the application of mechanical and electrical systems. Topics include electrical power systems, lighting, wiring, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, water supply, drainage, and sewers.

CMGT 350 - Construction Project Planning, Scheduling and Control

A course on construction project planning, scheduling, and control. Students apply project planning techniques such as CPM and PERT and learn to use computer tools for project scheduling.

CMGT 430 - Environmental Issues and Green Building

Understanding environmental issues and sustainability. Discusses issues such as land use, energy efficiency, water use, indoor environmental quality, life cycle analysis, and construction waste disposal. Learn high performance construction and green building assessment systems.

CMGT 440 - Construction Project Management

Learn project management concepts, such as roles and responsibilities, delivery methods, labor relations and supervision, administrative systems, project control, computer tools for project management, documentation, quality management, commissioning, and process improvement.
